Why Do Some People Believe This?
One of the main symptoms that comes with a rabid animal is that its natural behavior will change, and the swelling in the brain caused by the disease may cause the animal to become active at unusual times of the day. However, there are also plenty of other reasons that a raccoon may choose to be active at unusual times, and to assume that every raccoon is rabid is incorrect, and could be a dangerous assumption to make.

The first key symptom that is usually easily identifiable when seeing the animal is that rabies carriers are generally foaming at the mouth, meaning that they should have distinctive white saliva around their mouth. Another of the symptoms is that rabid creatures have a strong aversion to water, so seeing animals veering away from puddles of ponds could also be a sign, while unusual aggressive behavior is another of the key symptoms of rabid animals.

What To Do If You Suspect A Raccoon Is Rabid
If you do see a raccoon that is displaying some of the symptoms of rabies, then it is important that you report this to your local animal services department, as they are responsible for dealing with dangerous animals.
