Dayton pest control

We are Ohio's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Dayton raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Dayton pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Dayton Raccoon Control Tip: Will Raccoons Spotted During The Day Be Carrying Rabies?
Raccoons are one of the most common pest species to be found in the United States, and while they did originate in rural woodland areas, they have adapted well to being able to survive in urban areas too. One of the biggest concerns that people should have when dealing with raccoons is that they are one of the main carriers of rabies in the country. They are generally active around dusk and at night, so will seeing a raccoon active during the day mean they are definitely rabid?

Why Do Some People Believe This?
One of the main symptoms that comes with a rabid animal is that its natural behavior will change, and the swelling in the brain caused by the disease may cause the animal to become active at unusual times of the day. However, there are also plenty of other reasons that a raccoon may choose to be active at unusual times, and to assume that every raccoon is rabid is incorrect, and could be a dangerous assumption to make.

Reasons A Raccoon May Be Active During The Day
A significant factor that can have an impact on when raccoons can become active is whether they are feeding baby raccoons, as the demands of being a parent can have an impact on when these raccoons are active. Many nursing females may see their activity times change in line with when their babies are asleep. In some situations, such as when garbage is put out for collection on some mornings, this availability of food at a certain time of day can also have an impact on when a raccoon will be active.

The Proportion Of Raccoons That Are Rabies Carriers
While raccoons are one of the main reservoirs of rabies in the United States, representing around a quarter of all animals tested carrying rabies each year, it is still only a small proportion of raccoons that carry the disease on the whole. Estimates that around ten to fifteen percent of raccoons may actually carry rabies are common figures discussed, so it certainly doesn't mean that even a large proportion of animals carrying the diseases are actually rabies carriers.

Signs Of Rabies In A Raccoon
If you do see a raccoon that is active during the day, being able to identify the symptoms that can indicate that the animal may be rabid can be useful, as in many cases it will also help to put your mind at ease. The first key symptom that is usually easily identifiable when seeing the animal is that rabies carriers are generally foaming at the mouth, meaning that they should have distinctive white saliva around their mouth. Another of the symptoms is that rabid creatures have a strong aversion to water, so seeing animals veering away from puddles of ponds could also be a sign, while unusual aggressive behavior is another of the key symptoms of rabid animals.

What To Do If You Suspect A Raccoon Is Rabid
If you do see a raccoon that is displaying some of the symptoms of rabies, then it is important that you report this to your local animal services department, as they are responsible for dealing with dangerous animals. You should give them a call, and report the location of the animal and the symptoms that make you think the animal may be rabid. Where possible, they may ask you to monitor the animal so that when they arrive, you can direct them immediately to find the animal that they will catch and destroy, to prevent it from being a health hazard to others.
